The incident on P 219 has had me thinking for the past few days.
Blind Rams were used to protect from dropping something down the well, blind rams were intended to shut your well in in the event you have a kick and you are OOH.
Have I used them as a hole protector before? Yes, absolutely, will I ever again? No! The same goes for Pop Valves/Pop Offs. They were intended to protect lives and pumps, not intended as a drilling parameter for mud motors or completion strings.
Now I pass no judgement on anyone that uses these safety devices as operational tools. I would like to see it become law worldwide that every rig has to have a casing bowl gauge or sensor. I would also like to see it as law that blind rams are only allowed to be used to F/T or as they were intended, to shut in a well in the event of a kick.
With how busy things can become, and every situation different it is very easy to open your blinds without first opening your HCR. I have seen people be very judgemental on the current incident of 219 and all I can say is we were not there, we do not know all the fine details leading up, we have bits of information but that hardly makes the story.
With respect to the fallen let’s use this situation as a Learning tool to what we can do going forward.
Almost everything we have learned in this industry has come from trial and error and from other people’s misfortune. Going forward I would like to see more questions from the members of this group, doesn’t matter if it’s simple or very technical, there will be an answer for you.
Drillers Club has always been a great tool for this, often comments within a post have their own branched off useful information. I encourage all of us to gain more knowledge in all aspects, it will be our greatest tool going forward in this industry.
Stay Safe, Teach them hands, and have a good day.
